Taylors Architects cops top architectural award for Evelyn Mitchell Infant School

Taylors Architects copped the Governor General’s Award for Excellence for their design of the Evelyn Mitchell Infant School/Centre of Excellence in Clarendon.

“The overall quality of the exhibits is of an extremely high standard, making the final decision of the assessors difficult said,d Evan Williams, registered architect and member of the Jamaica Institute of Arcthitects (JIA).

Professor Alberto Perez-Gomez of McGill University’s School of Architecture and Professor Ralph Mills-Tettey, registered architect and Fellow of the Ghana Institute of Architects, were charged with selecting the recipient of the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Architecture.

The assessors said, “careful scale that appears welcoming to the children (rather than imposing or controlling), the very nice solution of the classrooms with high clerestory windows that make the rooms airy providing the necessary concentration, the way all design decisions seem appropriate to the pedagogical aims of the programme, from the terracing and landscape to the ‘didactic walls’.”

One sponsor, CHEC Americas has congratulated Taylors Architects.

“I want to congratulate Taylors Architects on their immense achievement. The designs from all of the entrants were both outstanding and inspirational,”remarked Jennifer Armond, Regional Communications Manager of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Americas.

‘Excellence Through Architecture’ is this year’s theme for the 2014 Architects Week Programme hosted by the JIA.

Evelyn Mitchell Infant School/Centre of Excellence was born in 2008 when Cari-Med’s founders Glen and Marva Christian were approached to assist with upgrading facilities for Top Hill Basic, a small school in the hills of Clarendon, Jamaica.

The school’s design topped the 59 other entries that vied for the award.
